To prepare for disasters

13. Developing Receipes for Soup Kitchen during Emergency

This activity focuses on developing recipes for soup kitchen to be provided to disaster victims. In times of disaster, it is essential to offer nutritionally balanced meals despite limited ingredients and resources. In a broader sense, this activity can also be considered a form of disaster preparedness.

One of the most popular tools for disaster meal preparation is the “emergency rice cooker bag,” which allows large quantities of rice to be cooked easily. When served with soup or curry with lots of ingredients, a nutritious meal can be provided.

Additionally, Red Cross volunteers and dietitians at Red Cross hospitals have developed various recipes. The Disaster Relief Cooking Recipes collection includes a wide range of easy-to-make meals, from dishes that appeal to children to soft foods suitable for the elderly, as well as low-sodium options.

Beyond nutrition, cooking and serving hot meals at soup kitchen also play a vital role in fostering communication between disaster victims and relief workers. Sharing a warm meal can help people recover both physically and emotionally.
