To prepare for disasters

14. Participating in Red Cross Disaster Prevention Seminars

Red Cross disaster prevention seminars provide local residents with the knowledge, awareness, and skills needed to prepare for natural disasters. The goal is to strengthen disaster preparedness and promote self-help and mutual aid, benefiting both individuals and the broader community.

Organized by the Japanese Red Cross Society, these seminars draw on experience gained from past disaster responses to help people prepare for large-scale disasters predicted to occur in the future. They are conducted by the Japanese Red Cross Society’s prefectural chapters, with many volunteers actively participating as instructors who facilitate the sessions. There are also participatory learning programs that are fun and educational: Disaster Preparedness, which teaches disaster prevention knowledge for different types of disasters; Disaster Ethnography, which helps participants visualize disasters through the experiences of past victims; Disaster Imagination Game (DIG), where participants create local disaster prevention maps to identify hazardous areas and disaster prevention resources; and Evacuation Center Experience, a card game that simulates aspects of life in an evacuation center.

By participating in Red Cross disaster prevention seminars, local residents can ensure their own safety and develop the ability to help each other in the event of a disaster.
