To support people recovering from crises

16. Supporting Migrants and Refugees

People who are forced to leave their homes due to armed conflicts, natural disasters, or other crises face various risks during displacement and migration. They also often live in unstable conditions in their new locations. A wide range of support is essential not only for migrants and refugees but also for the communities that welcome them.

For example, in response to the large influx of refugees from Myanmar to Bangladesh in August 2017, the Japanese Red Cross Society, in cooperation with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, launched emergency relief efforts. These activities are still ongoing, with the Japanese Red Cross working alongside the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, to provide medium- to long-term support aiming at strengthening the resilience (recovery and response capabilities from disasters) of both displaced persons and local residents. This includes operating a clinic in the refugee camp and providing medical services for chronic diseases, as well as maternal and child health care.

Many displaced persons play a central role as volunteers in these activities. Their involvement helps build relationships of trust within the refugee community and positively impacts overall support efforts by strengthening community cohesion.
