To support people recovering from crises

17. Supporting the Reestablishment of Livelihoods

Residents who received livestock through the Rwandan Red Cross Society’s livelihood support activities

This activity helps people who have lost their jobs or means of livelihood due to conflict or disaster rebuild independent lives. Support goes beyond providing food and supplies—it also includes financial assistance for work, vocational training such as sewing, and other region- and family-specific aid aimed at long-term livelihood stability. These efforts help ensure sustainable livelihoods.

For example, in Africa, which has faced a severe food crisis in recent decades, cash assistance has been provided as part of emergency livelihood support. This allowed households to obtain the supplies they need based on their own priorities. In Rwanda, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement has implemented various initiatives to help overcome poverty, such as cultivating vegetable gardens for daily food and generating income by selling milk and eggs through livestock programs. Additionally, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is supporting long-term stability by establishing joint savings programs and providing small loans for residents.
