20. Donating Blood and Encouraging Others to Donate

Blood donation is a voluntary act performed free of charge to help save the lives of patients in need of blood due to illness or injury. Since blood products cannot be stored for long periods, it is essential to encourage regular donations to ensure a stable supply.

In Japan, around 5 million people donate blood each year, and much of it is used by patients with cancer or leukemia. However, due to the declining birthrate and aging population, the number of young donors is decreasing, making it increasingly important to promote regular blood donation. In response, many Red Cross volunteers actively work to raise awareness. For example, Volunteer Students on Blood-Donation Promotion, made up of school students, organizes events and campaigns tailored to different seasons and regions. They also use social media and posters to spread awareness about the need for blood donations.

Because blood donation requires no special skills or preparation, it is easy to participate in. To make it even more accessible, the Japanese Red Cross Society operates a blood donation web membership service called “Love Blood”. Through Love Blood, donors can schedule appointments and check their blood test results online, making it a convenient tool for those who wish to donate regularly. Blood donation is a simple and accessible yet highly meaningful volunteer activity.
